Data File Formats

XPS makers normally store their raw XPS data in a binary format. The XPS makers have software that converts the binary format into a plain ASCII or TEXT version which normally includes the experimental parameters used when the XPS data was collected.

In 1994, Martin Seah at the NPL VAMAS built a software produces a “universal” file format that XPS users can use to Exchange their data with other scientists. That software has been incorporated into many of the software produced by the XPS Instrument Makers so that the owner can export their XPS data and share it with scientists using other types of XPS software. ISO accepted to develop and promote the use of the VAMAS file format using the name of the ISO document:  ISP-14976.  Today the VAMAS files are also called ISO files which contain the same information all of it in ASCII text. This VAMAS file format can be used to export and import not only standard XPS spectra (surveys, and narrow scan spectra) but also Depth Profile plots and XY maps.

This file format is not designed to retain peak-fitted information, or free placed peak labels. You can exchange ASCII data.

Here is a screen capture of the VAMAS information that is provided by SDP software.

The SDP software allows the scientist to modify the ISO / VAMAS settings.
